As January is drawing to its close and we are getting set into the new reality of 2017; life is picking up steam. Hopes and dreams of the New Year await their realization, business goals – their achievement, and personal life should not be left unattended either. The arts play a major part in our lives: as entertainment, as vehicle of change, and as reflection on the issues society faces every day. So, let’s see what’s going on in Dallas in the upcoming week.
January 31st will start the run of “An American in Paris” musical production by Dallas Summer Musicals. Tony Award winning director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon created a spectacular extravaganza of music, acting and dance. The story of romance between an American soldier and a mysterious French girl set in post-war Paris is sure to be a pleasant distraction and a heart-warming delight. The musical is scheduled to run at the Music Hall at Fair Park through February 12th – a perfect pre-Valentine date!
Another treat for the senses is Shen Yun 2017 performance that brings to Dallas the magic of traditional Chinese music and dance. Built upon 5,000 years of history, the program consists of 20 separate pieces boasting high flying leaps, colorful costumes, animated stage decorations and breath-taking blend of orchestra music and thunderous drums.
On February 1st, Arts and Letters series of Dallas Museum of Art brings to Dallas a wonderful speaker, Stanford University professor and a former tech executive at Apple, Dave Evans. Having made a career in Apple and Electronic Arts, Evans transferred his creative problem-solving abilities from technology to life. He co-authored No.1 New York Times bestselling book “Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life” and will be sharing with the audience his tips on how to transform one’s life by applying the same innovative techniques as are used in developing ground-breaking technologies.
Another exciting event at the Dallas Museum of Art is the opening of “The New Architecture” exhibit of Carey Young, London-based innovative contemporary artist, who debuts her Palais de Justice video creation in Dallas on February 2nd. The video together with other new and existing photographic and text-based works comprise Young’s view of the concept of power. The artist together with SMU professor of the Meadows School of the Arts Dr. Michael Corris will be talking to the public at 2 pm on February 2nd and discussing her artistic ideas about performance, space and inspirations.
Music lovers can enjoy a few noteworthy options during the week. British pop singer Rick Astley will be appearing at the House of Blues on February 1st.
