Art Activities for the Week of December 19th

With Christmas rapidly approaching, many of us are focused on the last minute shopping, family visit preparations, and last decisions for the holiday menus. However, if you want to take a night off from all the craziness, or are lucky to be done with the arrangements early, we have a few suggestions for your week’s entertainment.

The week starts December 19th with a beautiful concert of Handel’s Messiah presented by the Dallas Bach Society at the Meyerson Symphony Center. I was fortunate to hear this immortal masterwork in the past, and I assure you that it is the experience to never be forgotten. The concert will feature Dallas Bach Orchestra and Chorus with soloists Ava Pine, Derek Chester, David Grogan, and a brilliant young Alto Kathryne Overturf. (Artistic Director – James Richman).

Another outstanding experience awaits you on December 22, brought to you by the world-renowned Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The band is scheduled to appear at the American Airlines Center for two performances at 3:30 pm and at 8 pm. The progressive quartet of musicians has become a new era holiday sensation since its inception in 1996. Their upcoming concert will bring to the Dallas audiences the real rock opera experience. “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve” is the last one in the two-decade tradition of exceptionally successful productions by the band.

December 23rd is packed with options; all of them dedicated to Christmas celebration, all of them exceptional in their own way. Eisemann Center will host a one night performance of The Hip Hop Nutcracker coming to us from New York – an incredible evening-length production that re-imagines Tchaikovsky’s classic through the lens of modern hip hop culture. The traditional Nutcracker story will be interpreted via explosive dance, on-stage DJ and an electric violinist-virtuoso. It is unusual, to say the least, but also tempting.

Another treat on December 23rd is presented by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Jim Curry’s heartwarming tribute to John Denver’s Rocky Mountain Christmas will bring to life timeless classics like Annie’s Song, Rocky Mountain High as well as Christmas hits Christmas for Cowboys and A Baby Just Like You, and more!

Last, but not least, is the performance of a world-famous counter tenor John Holiday that will take place at the Kessler. IKEEN Music presents “The Holiday Experience 2016: an Electric Christmas Celebration” featuring Mr. Holiday and The Texas String Quartet. The concert will be an eclectic mix of jazz, classical, r&b, and gospel, and will include appearances of an all-star line-up of artists including Neeki Bey, Kristin Yost, Nigel Rivers, and David Marquis.

Christmas is upon us. Be happy, stay warm, and embrace the feelings of Peace and Joy. After all, it is the most wonderful time of the year!
