A Designer’s Big Break

In its fourth year the Belk Seeks Fashion Designer Showcase is looking for the next sensation in modern southern style in women’s apparel, men’s apparel, kid’s apparel, shoes and women’s accessories to add to its existing collection of brands. Lucy Dang a past winner of the Belk Seeks Fashion Designer can attest to the once in a lifetime opportunity that the showcase is. Dang and her team of 6 that have been together since they met at The University of North Texas School of Fashion and Merchandising. Referring to themselves as the “Dang Gang”, they were struggling to get their dress line into major stores until Lucy got a last minute call from her best friend’s mother about entering the Belk Seeks Fashion Designer Competition. Dang says “at the time I was working in New York and had never heard of the Clothing store Belk until I entered the competition.” She put together what she needed and the heads of the competition scheduled a video interview with Dang thinking that it was the next phase of advancement, but little did she know the video interview was to congratulate her on winning the competition. The doors that Belk opened up for Dang and her design team was career changing. The line went from being within a few small boutiques to being in all of Belk’s Flagship stores as well as online at ww.Belk.com. Belk provided the financial backing to keep up with popular demand of Dang’s dresses flying off their racks and acknowledges that Belk got her the exposure along with name recognition that allowed the line to have so much success. The Dang Gang is back in Dallas with the new title of Lucy being named In House Designer for Stanley Korshak Bridal, making custom gowns for the opulent taste of Dallas women. Dang’s story is just one of many of how the Fashion Designer Showcase has opened doors for upcoming designers as well as helped expand their knowledge and experience of the industry. Cynthia Washburn-Nester, Belk’s vice president of trend merchandising and fashion direction says “We are proud that every year our Southern Designer Showcase gives a new group of emerging fashion designers the opportunity to design collections that our Belk customers can embrace.” For more information on how to enter go to belk.com/southerndesigner to submit an application through March 31, 2016 with finalists being selected by April 20, 2016, and invited to present their designs at Belk headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 19, 2016.
