What is a better illustration of the American spirit than the colorful bursts of the Independence Day fireworks? Every city, large and small, would soon be exploding in cheerful celebrations accompanied by the bursts of red, white and blue. This summer holiday has become a tradition of celebration of who we are – fearless, unique and often unrestrained individuals united by the common ideals and the pride of our country.
I have recently been researching Vogue publications of previous decades, and I marveled on how the look of clothes, although varying through time, continued to convey the same notions of the American style: bald, sexy, confident and mostly casual. Freedom of movement and physical comfort have always been important to us. We love to dress up, but the style of the Fourth of July is what we truly enjoy and want to live in. Blue jeans and a white t-shirt paired with a red bag – that’s the quintessential American girl: fun-loving, self-confident and smart.
The fashions of the most important National Holiday are assertive, vibrant and unapologetic. Is this the strength of the star spangled banner shining through? Or is it the character of the people that makes the fashion speak this language? When I see these photos, I see generations of Americans growing up and carrying on the tradition of bright smiles, summer barbecues, and Fourth of July fireworks. Red, white and blue is part of our national culture and tradition. This is the day to show it. I, for one, got really inspired. I think a new red dress is an order for the upcoming celebration. What about you? Be yourself! Be American! Fourth of July is right around the corner.
