Less is More is the latest exhibition of Rankin’s conceptual work that surely will make you think. John Rankin Waddell, to the world he’s simply known as Rankin. By combining conceptual art with fashion photography, Rankin created a way to stimulate conversation yet something accessible to everybody to understand and love.
“I really believe in photography that makes you think as well as feel something. Less is More is the first time I’ve brought my more conceptual work together. It does what it says on the tin: showing fewer pieces that have more meaning to me.”
Through tongue-in-cheek humour and emotive quality, Rankin’s carefully curated show at the Kunsthalle Rostock in Germany featured imagery from his time as co-founder of Dazed & Confused. His work will give you the time and space to absorb the ideas and crafts. It is all about evoking raw emotions and a gut reaction.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Rankin and curator
Ulrich Ptak. The show is minimalistic with Rankin creating an “event image” specific to the space of the beautiful art museum. This frieze of seven-metre statuesque nudes has to be seen to be appreciated.
“When I saw the white cube space at the Kunsthalle Rostock, I had to create something for it, an experimental image that can only be truly appreciated in person.” His point of view is to engage, excite and to provoke.
“We live in an age of ‘brand me’ and smart phones ...I want to put people face-to-face with photography, to stop them in their tracks.”
The exhibition opens at 6pm on the 12th December and will run from 13th December until 28th February 2016. The Kunsthalle Rostock is located in the City of Rostock between Hamburg and Berlin.
