The fashion scene of today can be categorized as a celebration of individuality. There is an abundance of choices in colors, lengths, silhouettes and the overall aesthetics. On one hand, it is a feast both for the eyes and for the creation of unique personal styles, but on the other, this variety makes it difficult to stand out, to make a significant impression for individual designers. Just like it is difficult to discern a particular sound amongst many noises, it is challenging in the current creative industry to have a distinctive voice.
I must say that new strong voices do appear, and they are certainly heard when they are as unique as Angelys Balek Label. A Thai-born fine artist, Angelys Balek launched her fashion brand in New York in 2013, and that same year she was nominated as a finalist in WGSN’s Global Fashion Awards. Since then, her collections were featured online and in fashion publications in WWD, Marie Claire, Elle, Lucky and Harper’s Bazaar.
Angelys draws her inspiration from diverse cultures, travels and experiences, focusing on feminine spirituality and contemporary energy. She translates her original artwork into unique fabric prints, taking her vision from canvas to cloth. The designer constructs highly architectural visual forms by using multi-level hemlines, cut-outs and textures, and produces cutting-edge designs while relying on the classic sophisticated shapes.
The young designer divides her time between North America, where her collections are produced, and Asia, particularly Thailand – her home-country and the location of her flagship store. In a few short years she has taken her brand onto the international market, selling her ready-to- wear collections in specialty retailers across the globe and online.
Angelys Balek Fall/Winter ready-to-wear collection 2016 is a blend of nature-inspired patterns in muted earthy tones, strong geometric lines and the unusual high-quality textiles and materials, like furs and leathers. Her multi-continental experience brings to life an eclecticfusion of expression in every design: the urban chic energy of New York is combined with the playful sensuality of Thailand, exquisite blend of European fabrications – with original prints from her own artwork.
The results are striking, while being understated, sophisticated without being fussy. I look forward to seeing what she brings forward next. Angelys Balek Spring/Summer collection 2017 is expected to be presented later this year during New York Fashion Week.
