Called by ELLE “the new king of old-school glamour”, Cristian Siriano did not disappoint with his Spring Summer 2017 collection. This year his show-stopping designs originated from the whimsy of the gorgeous city of Capri. Oh those colors of Italy! They simply dazzled as the models walked the runway in a succession of azure blues, stunning whites, sun-set reds and exquisite blacks.
The collection definitely had an Italian feel, but with distinct recognizable touches of the young design genius. It is no wonder that celebrities of all walks of life favor his work. Cristian Siriano dressed the First Lady Michelle Obama and such Hollywood A-listers as Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hilary Swank, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez and Sarah Jessica Parker, just to name a few. He seems to have a particular knack to be able to make every woman look and feel beautiful.
The line up included models of all sizes and ethnicities. This, while still unusual for the mainstream fashion, is a real indication that designers are beginning to think differently and want to be inclusive of all the varieties of body sizes and types when they approach the design process. In fact, the public responded by loud applause each time a plus size model entered the runway. Cristian Siriano designed specifically for each model, flattering the ladies in unique ways, accentuating the most favorable and attractive features.
Layering, and abundance of flowing fabrics brought the garments alive. The trench-inspired azure gown, the white number with a plunging neckline and a capelet, and the luxurious masterpiece in tangerine with ruching details reminiscent of the rays of the setting sun – were my absolute favorites.
Perhaps, it is my personal penchant for evening gowns, but the daywear offering seemed to pale in comparison. However, who I am to judge? I would give my full wardrobe of daywear and all for an opportunity to wear a custom dress by Cristian Siriano. A girl can dream, right?
