Nothing can convey the spirit of romance better than the evocation of Parisian Spring. Dan Liu, the well-known Canadian fashion designer, chose this theme for his Spring Summer 2017 runway collection. Playing up on the idea of a Parisian café, he inserted himself in the show as a spectator watching beautiful women go buy. The collection, consisting entirely of romantic contemporary dresses, is the answer to every woman’s dream. Ranging from playful to tailored, from ultra-feminine to reserved the line-up sings the ode to the modern woman in all her sparkling variations.
Starting with a soft color palette and feminine shapes, the presentation evolves into more robust patterns and tones of olive green, blue, deep purple and gold, finishing with night-appropriate black. Most of the dresses stop at knee length; they are playful, but not overly revealing. Lace is used in abundance, as are flower inspired motifs. On the other side of the spectrum are striking geometric patterns, such as an unusual intermix of circles and rectangles arranged in graphic layers. Many designs incorporate layering: with lace semi-sheer outer-cover up and solid underlining.
The punch-line of the collection is the striking black gown shown at the closing. As the model walked the runway, I couldn’t help but think of the incarnation of a beautiful night slowly befalling on Paris. Soft floating folds of fabric of the body and sleeves flared outward from the shoulders, while the flower-lace inset on the chest evoked the appearance of stars amidst the depth of the sky.
Dan Liu named SS17 collection “New Path”. It is a fitting name for the presentation, especially considering the designer’s reasoning behind it. “It’s not just a new path for my company, it’s a new path for my design, for my clients, for my customers…” , – he said in his interview with CCTV America’s Michelle Makori. That statement is exciting in itself; it creates an expectation for the future, a sense of anticipation and exhilaration that we will cherish for the years to come.
