FENG CHEN WANG: Provocateur and Successor to COMME DES GARÇONS
Feng Chen Wang is the London based brand of Beijing-born designer Feng Chen Wang. Wang completed her Masters at London’s Royal College of Arts before launching her brand in 2015. She focuses her aesthetic on combining function with an astute attention to detail and strong focus on outerwear pieces. Feng presented her AW16 ‘I am a Man’ collection during New York Fashion Week and was one of 23 designers shortlisted for the prestigious LVMH Prize 2016. Her collections are available to buy internationally from stores including Lane Crawford (Shanghai), D-MOP (Hong Kong), GR8 (Tokyo) and Vfiles (New York City).
Feng has a great sense humor. She is one to watch. One cannot help but draw conclusion that the designer herself is heavily influenced by the philosophy of Comme des Garçons.
This designer constructs one of her designs using liberal amount of nylon-windbreaker fabric as if her subject is planning for a long expedition deep into the Himalayas in search for Shangri-la. Yes, layering will be a must and BYOSB (Bring Your Own Sleeping Bag). I admit I don’t get her point of view on all the pieces in the MAN presentation except without hesitation I made a comment after viewing: Why? Perhaps that’s exactly the type of provocation she anticipates.
Right now this collection’s oversized long suits are Mad Max in space. I went back to check on Feng’s AW16 collection for Fashion Week New York, that debut collection was awesome with similar references on the culture of urban explorers and city mountaineers. AW16 was dope, the MAN 2016 presentation though original, only through time she might become the next Junya Watanabe. Although I would like Feng to come to Texas and create a collection with references on the flip-flop culture here.
Some of us made clothes, some designers are fashion anthropologists and poets like Feng.
