The Spring/Summer 2017 collection of Robert Geller certainly takes you back in time. Those old enough unmistakably recognize the 1980’s vibe that permeates the designs. Drawing on the experiences of his native Germany, Robert Geller finds inspiration in the “Geniale Dilletanten” scene – the raw and provocative time of the underground experimentation in the culture of youth.
Vibrant energy and artistic effervescence speak loudly through neon colors and irreverent attitude to the silhouette of today. The collection plays on proportions, shapes and movement. Extra large pants are paired with narrow jackets, and oversize coats with cropped pants. We see the strong punctuating color statements in lime green and orange, Polaroid appliques on a variety of elements, and, of course, the leopard print. The grunge however, is toned down by the use of soft silks and cottons. You get a sense of refinement and sophistication, as if the old rebels grew up and became polished without ever giving up the ideals of authenticity and self-expression.
Robert Geller’s collection is complimented by the sunglasses designed by him in collaboration with Garrett Leight, and the shoes developed in partnership with Common Project.
The audience certainly responded to the vibrant vision of the designer. The demonstration concluded to a standing ovation.
