The iconic American brand, Perry Ellis, has unveiled its Spring/Summer 2017 menswear collection July 11, 2016 at New York Fashion Week: Men’s. I have to say, it is an interesting process to see the transformation of the brand, as it evolves with the trends of the 21 st century. Michael Maccari, the Creative Director of Perry Ellis, continues to push this iconic brand into its younger incarnation, and may I say – he is doing it brilliantly.
Last year there were a few looks that I personally did not embrace (such as leggings under shorts), however, this year the collection is fresh, hip and youthfully defiant. Of course, we see the classic Perry Ellis suits, however, some are styled with a distinct nod to sportswear–accessorized with sweaters or dusters tied around the models’ waists, or paired with tracksuit jackets. Overall, there is a distinct departure from the look of a traditional suit towards more casual sensibilities – in the direction of sportswear. We see a variety of parkas and tracksuits, and multiple combinations of sporty elements used in ensembles with more traditional menswear.
The new look of Perry Ellis has not lost its sophistication, but it obtained a flair for youthful, casual chic. Youth and vitality simply permeated the presentation. Among my favorites is a delectable choice of suede bomber jackets and casual linen wear – those are the elements of a modern man I can happily embrace.
I also have to comment on the color palette. I think what makes the collection sophisticated is the distinctly adult and refined choice of colors. Army green, navy, stone, spruce and lapis play their roles in painting an unapologetically strong, but also manly-restrained image of Perry Ellis man of tomorrow.
