Oh, the heavenly creatures! The fairies have descended to walk the runway of Tadashi Shoji’s Spring runway show in New York City. It is hard to remember another collection with the same amount of whimsy, beauty, translucency and imagination. This year the designer embarked on an imaginative journey following the fantastic imagery of “The Flying Ark” short film by artist Wu Junyong. Loosely based on the Noah’s Ark story, the collections created allusions to the beings of Nature: from sinuous snakes, to fluttering birds, and even to fierce tigers.
The colors spoke of the sky, making your souls sore with the fluttering blues, sheer creams and grays and, vibrant sunset hues. Sexy lace, which is Tadashi’s signature, predominated in the collection. A lot of dresses showed exquisite embroidery in a variety of fanciful motifs, a leopard print, for example. Other embellishments included ample use of ostrich-feathers in various color combinations.
The choice of silhouettes varied from flirty cocktail numbers to sexy long dresses with plunging necklines, to voluminous evening gowns with parachute skirts that floated like clouds as the models walked down the runway. Spring 2017 is an ecstatic vision of rebirth. It is a meld of heavenly and earthly, of tangible and ethereal, it is the symphony of life itself.
