Some people just know how to wow the audience. This time I am talking of John Varvatos. Showing of his Spring /Summer 2017 collection took place at the culmination of the New York Fashion Week: Men’s. The designer chose The Roxy Hotel’s underground nightclub The Django for his venue. The location spoke the language of rock-n-roll and offered the guests a truly up-close experience. Its size limited the number of invitations and provided the opportunity to see the finest details of the clothing and the footwear in an intimate setting. It was the perfect marriage of the space and the famous designer’s rock-n-roll aesthetic.
For the first time, Varvatos decided to name the collection. “The Urban Romantic” presented the notion of a modern city dweller that loves the grit and the culture, but also appreciates the Old World details and craftsmanship. I think it is the best collection of the brand in some years. It offers an array of jackets in variations of styles and lengths, from tough moto jackets to jacquard tuxedo, paired with scarves and slim trousers. Fabrics are rich in textures. We see embossed suedes, jacquard knits and linens flecked with metallic fibers, as well as silk and wool.
The Urban Romantic loves options. In addition to multi-lengths and multi-styles jacket offering, there is gorgeous knitwear, crafted in cashmere-silk and linen-silk blends, produced with a fresh approach to texture. Trousers are elongated and sophisticated. However, denim gets edgier – a pair of a white jean features a vertical zip down the side.
Footwear boasts impeccable detailing. Venetian slip-ons are underlined with embossed fleur-de-lis soles. There are tornado style zip closures, ring-adorned hardware, and distressed leather straps, just to name a few.
Following the show, Varvatos held an after party at the former CBGB in the Bowery – now a corporate showcase for the brand. It was the last official event of the NYFWM in partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The after party and a celebratory concert featuring Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown became the backdrop for the introduction of John Varvatos’s newest fragrance, Dark Rebel Rider – the newest addition to his Dark Rebel fragrance collection. Among the supporters of the launch and the attendees of the party were musicians Michine Gun Kelly and Travis Mills, an actor Corey Hawkins, and pro-football athlete Dale Moss. Other notable attendees included Ken Downing, Colton Haynes, Johannes Huebl, Kellan Lutz, Eric Rutherford.
